The Daughter of "The Oak of the Coast" Warns Syrian Authorities Against Exploiting Her Mother's Case
Social media platforms have been circulating a video attributed to Mayada Rihan, the daughter of Zarqa Sebahiya, known as the "Oak of the Coast." In the video, she warns the new Syrian authorities against exploiting her mother's case for political purposes.
In the video, Mayada stated that she rejects any meeting with official bodies and called on Ahmad al-Shara to immediately remove armed factions from the coast.
The video showed the mother standing in front of the bodies of her two sons, Kinan and Suhail (who is a teacher and translator), and her grandson Lamak Reyhan, lying on the road after they were killed on the 7th of this month. An individual was filming her while mocking her, directing sectarian remarks at her.
He said to her, "You are treacherous; we gave you security, but you betrayed us," referring to the targeting of "remnants of the previous regime" by security forces. The shocked woman responded, saying, "You have betrayed."
The spokesperson for the Inquiry Committee, Yaser Al-Farhan, stated in television remarks that the designated committee will soon meet with the grieving mother.
It is noteworthy that the Syrian transitional president, Ahmad al-Shara, announced the formation of a committee to investigate some violations that occurred in the coastal provinces with an Alawite majority in recent days due to violent confrontations between security forces and armed elements loyal to former president Bashar al-Assad. He also vowed to pursue these "remnants" and hold accountable all those who committed crimes or violations against civilians.
